Livermore, California October 1999
Let the relaxing begin. Our 10th annual show is history and in the record books. From my perspective it was a huge success. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL. It took a team effort and that is what we got. I saw new members diving right in - a healthy sign for the future of this club. We will spend a little time at the next meeting with observations about things that went right and things that we could improve on. The next two meetings are a time for nominations of officers for year 2000 (will we ever get used to saying and writing that?). Please give thought to your response should you be nominated. I hope we will have choices at every position. Choices are healthy for the club. And the jobs are not difficult - not with the cooperation that we always get from this group. Please say, "yes, I'll run". At the close of nominations at the November meeting we will conduct the election and announce winners. Please plan to attend both of these important events. We will relax with a trip to Branson, MO. Kick back, read a little by the pool, take in shows (so far we have tickets for Wayne Newton, The Oakridge Boys, Jim Stafford, and a 50's Review), and walk the streets. Our flight to Omaha connects in Denver and I just saw on the weather channel that it will snow there tonight - sounds like a wonderful start. We go to Omaha so I can stop by the old Bellevue NE High School, my stomping grounds where most of those tall tales originated. And yes gang (you're way ahead of me right?), we had a lot of crazy times there, some would even say they were insane. From there we drive to Branson. Wish us well. Thanks. We'll be back in time for the mystery tour. Gotta go pack. Let's see, snow in Denver, hot in Omaha, humid everywhere - but we don't care, we can relax anywhere under any conditions. Happy Cruzin' PHIL As Chairperson of this years Nostalgia Day Car Show I would like to thank all of the club members who gave their time and energy toward making this another successful event. I specifically want to recognize and personally thank the committee co-chairs Ed English, Bob Black and Colleen Maas, for without their dedication, hard work and tireless efforts we would not have had a Nostalgia Day Car Show, much less a successful one that we had. I also want to recognize those members whom I consider the "Core" of this years, as well as, past years Nostalgia Day events. These are the members that were at the event at 0-dark thirty and remained until the end of the show to assist with reloading everything we had unloaded at dawns early light, except for the raffle prizes that were unloaded to the winners. I also want to personally thank Dick Maas for obtaining so many sponsorships and donations, to Ron & Kathy Sweet who faithfully attended the NDCS meetings, to Bob & Jeanie Cummins who also attended the ever popular meetings and kept us in line budget wise, to Phil & Shellie Schuyler who were always willing to assist in any way possible, and of course my wife Sue who puts up with all this, helps me in every way possible, keeps us all happy and always seems to take care of the little things. Thank you all, for without you we would not have had a Nostalgia Day Car Show. Everyone worked stuffing goodie bags and stuffing their tummies, well that wasn't hard! We all had a wonderful time. Thanks Joe and Pat for again being a great host and hostess! (Jeanie has written more regarding the social else were in the newsletter) OK, by now the Nostalgia Car show is over! We can all rest up for our Thank You Social at Jose and Sandy's home. This Social is to thank everyone who has worked so HARD on the planning of the show and for working on the day of the event!!! Let's all show our support and come to the Thank You Social to show these people that we really do appreciate all the hard work they have done! The Thank You Social will be on Saturday, October 16th at 2:00pm. You still have time to sign up for this social at our next meeting. If you can't make the meeting just give Jose or Sandy a call. Also in October we have a Halloween Party at Bill and Sally's. I hope you all are working on those costumes. This will be a lot of fun. It's always fun to try to guess who's who! Bill and Sally really put there all into this social. Wait until you see all the Halloween decorations they have. Just remember it can be real scary!!! The Halloween Party is on October 30th at 7:00 p.m. Just for all you Ghosts, Goblins and Trick or Treaters we will have a sign up sheet at our next meeting for you to put your X on! Well, that's it for the socials this year. But wait! I hear from Santa that were going to have a Family Christmas Party!! That's right. On Saturday, December 11th, will be the Altamont Cruiser Family Christmas Party. The Party will start at 6:00 p.m. with dinner at 7:00pm. The cost for dinner is $20.00 per person (none member cost is $38.00). Moneys are due by Nov. 30th. We will have a sign up sheet at our Oct. and Nov. meetings. If you can't make it to the meeting, just give Jeanie or I a call and we'll sign you up. Please bring friends and family, they are all welcome. At the Christmas Party we will have a gift exchange, ornament exchange and wonderful door prizes. For all you crafty people out there, if you would like to donate something for the door prize it will be really appreciated! You all have donated such lovely things in the past. We will also have two boxes, one for Toys for Tots and one for Shepherds Gate. For the gift exchange we ask that you dont bring food items, please. Now remember, this is all up to you if you want to do the ornament and/or gift exchange. No one is obligated to do so, its strictly optional. It's just a fun night and we want to see all those Altamont Cruisers there enjoying a wonderful dinner and a great time!! So sign up at the next meeting!!! 2000 New Year's Eve Party! This will be a great evening. I know a lot of clever thinking and hard work is going into this to make it a great evening for all. Just think about it.... wouldn't it be great to be able to celebrate the New Year with friends and family. (Denise Black will have more on the New Year's Eve party elsewhere in the news letter, so LOOK for it!) The Social Committee thanks you for all your help and participation! KATHY This year's bag stuffing/social at Pat and Joe Carrillo's set a record. We had 400 goody bags stuffed in 35 minutes, and spent the next three hours stuffing ourselves. As usual, Pat and Joe outdid themselves in providing us with wonderful food (along with all the fabulous dishes cruisers contributed) and their warm hospitality. We all left there moaning "I ate too much"! Attending the stuffing (both kinds) were in no particular order: Barbara Hildalgo, Joe Shurko, Janice Pratt, Lauren VanMaren, Jim & Jackie Jones, Jon & Beth Medeiros, Bob & Jeanie Cummins, Ed and Carole Hughes, Shellie & Phil Schuyler, Sally & Bill Haag, Ed & Cindy English, Kathy & Ron Sweet, Darrel & Jean Johnston, Sylvia & Bruce Hanes, Jose & Sandy Gonzalez, Sue & Dale Benny and Dick & Colleen Maas. It was a great turnout, and made the work part of the day go very quickly. Thanks to everyone who attended, and special thanks to Joe and Pat, who as always, welcomed us into their home. Jeanie
NOSTALGIA DAY CAR SHOW THANK YOU I want to thank all of the club members that worked at our car show. At the end of the show, several people stopped me to tell me how much they enjoyed our car show. Most of you worked doubleshifts and many worked all day long. For those of you who pitched in and assisted when we needed extra help in several areas (parking, ballot counting, ticket sales, pulling down parking signs just to name a few), I really appreciate your help. Without your help, we couldnt have stayed on schedule for the day, nor raised the money that we did for the various programs that we support. Again, Thank you all! DENISE BLACK 1st DARE CAR OUTING A SUCCESS!! Our DARE Car made it's first public debut at Nostalgia Day and received a very favorable review. The DARE Officer from San Ramon was most impressed and was wishing they had a car club in their area to outfit such a ride for their organization. Many, many favorable comments were received by both car entrants and from the general public...."Neat idea"; "... a great project"; "You people are just great to be doing something like this" and many others, including a couple of "....still a lot of work to dos". The one that impressed me the most was one expressed by our own Barbara Hidalgo, "Dick would have been proud". To bring you up to date: the wiring is roughed in; you saw a sample of Mike Miller's work on the seats and he will be doing the rest of the upholstery in blacks and greys (the last thing to be done); we have an IDIDIT steering column on order with all the necessary steering hook-up parts .... should arrive around 10/5 (our current method of turning steering is truly "manual"); bumpers (a subject in itself) and other chrome items are in the process of being replated, including the grill; the police light bar is on order and should be here in a week or so; the exhaust system will be installed after we get the steering installed. We expect final painting to take place in late October and then the glass will be installed. A lot of small stuff to do with the major items being final wiring-steering-exhaust-paint (with flames!!!)-interior. We fully expect the car to be driven in the Christmas Parade (yes, in 1999!!) and to be ready for turn-over shortly after the first of the year. By the way, did you know that all the California DARE Officers attend an annual conference and at the conference they have a "DARE Car Show"?? The next conference is in April and will be held in Long Beach. Trophy time?? YES!! A special thanks to a couple of our in-club sponsors: Maas Tech Coat (Dick Maas) who is doing all of our powder coating; and Valley Lube (Dan Wittern) who has set up a $500 misc parts account for us at Monument. Also a special thanks to our "Head Honcho", Bruce Hanes, for his many hours and expertise (it's only temporary Sylvia, we are going to give him back after the car is completed!!). Thanks also to Ed English, Joe Carrillo, Cal Sato and Joe Shurko who have been familiar faces around the shop lately, and to Belle and Rex for keeping the workers entertained (yes, Rex is able to walk again). Darrel In a recent conversation with another club member I was told that there was a lot of information being put out that the DARE program was ineffective and was basically not working. Since our club has been a supporter of the program I looked into this a little deeper and found a lot of information on the program. The following excerpts are from a paper authored by Barry McCaffrey, Director of National Drug Control Policy: "D.A.R.E. is the largest, most effective, and well organized school- based program in America. Forty thousand D.A.R.E. officers teach in 10,000 cities. Twenty-six million children in the U.S. take part in the D.A.R.E. program. The adoption of the program by thousands of communities worldwide is a testament to its tremendous value and universal applicability." "D.A.R.E., in particular, is a good investment BECAUSE IT WORKS. To date, MORE THAN 50 INDEPENDENT EVALUATIONS have shown that students learn to resist drugs and violence through the D.A.R.E. curriculum. FIFTY-TWO PERCENT of the students who reported resisting peer pressure to use drugs said they had learned the resistance technique in D.A.R.E.. In a recent study done in California, kids reported that in addition to their parents, D.A.R.E. officers were the greatest influence on their decision not to use illegal substances. NINETY-FIVE PERCENT of the students believed that the program had influenced their decision not to use drugs". I also found the D.A.R.E. program to be endorsed by the Justice Department and by the National School Board Association, among many others. In talking to the San Ramon D.A.R.E. officer at the car show and officers from both the Pleasanton and Livermore programs this past week, I am strongly convinced that the program is working and worthy of our continuing support. Some local facts: In Livermore there were 852 graduates from the program in '98 from 6 middle schools. Our '98 funding helped pay for T-shirts, special awards and hall rentals for the graduations. In Pleasanton there were 1200 graduates from 5th grade in 8 elementary schools in '98; they expect the same number this year plus they are expanding the program to 1500 students in the 8th grades. Our last funding ('97) paid for two digital cameras and the development of a D.A.R.E. website for the kids to access. We also need to keep in mind that the program not only deals with drug usage but also on violence and other types of substance usage, such as alcohol and tobacco which we read about tragic examples of in our everyday newspapers. Granted that the success of D.A.R.E is dependent on the application and efforts of the individual police departments, there are cases of failed programs. I personally don't think this is the case in the Tri-Valley area. Thanks, Darrel
