Livermore, California   - August 1999

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Many members have been working on committees to get us rolling on our upcoming Nostalgia Day Car Show (NDCS). It is now time to expand the committees to include all members. At the last meeting we started by circulating a worker sign-up sheet. This show is our moneymaker - our way of raising money to be donated to our designated causes. We point our efforts toward youth drug use prevention. And over the years we have expanded to include people who are exiting abusive environments. This is a call to everyone to help us out. The Nostalgia Day Car Show, in downtown Livermore, is a premier event in the tri-valley area, attracting 400 vehicles. [We already have applications from as far away as Oregon.] We need your help! Please volunteer. If you cannot make it to the next meeting, please call our NDCS chairperson, Vice President Dale Benny (see last page of newsletter for phone number) and let him know you are eager to work. He will discuss the opportunities available to you and the benefits that you will receive by giving your valuable time. Thanks in advance for your effective participation.

We need NDCS raffle prizes. The raffle ticket money is one of the ways we raise funds. Our raffles have been extremely popular because of the quality and quantity of prizes. That helps to attract participant's back year after year. If you know someone who will donate an item, or if you can personally donate an item or money, to be used toward the purchase of an item, please arrange for it and get it together with the information (item and donor) to Colleen Maas.

Thanks Social Committee for another wonderful picnic at Del Valle. The weather cooperated; the food was copious - and good as usual. And the games brought out the wonderful sense of fair play we have grown to expect from this group. [Did you notice the big bulge, from my tongue, in my cheek as I typed that?] One of our female members was standing next to the barbecue pit. She was very pretty, a blonde I think, I don't know; her hair was on fire, and all she talked about was herself. You know these kind of girls: "I'm hot, I'm on fire." Me, me me, you know: "help me. Put me out." Come on now, could we talk about someone else for a change. We had all kinds of first aid equipment on hand, all except a fire extinguisher that is. She's okay now, but a little steamed and still doing a slow burn about her treatment. Ugh! One of our male members seemed to have a fixation with eggs - even to the point of hurling them at innocent members. After the picnic, his wife went to their psychiatrist and said, "Doc, my husband is crazy; he thinks he's a chicken." It is reported that the doctor said, "Why don't you bring him in, maybe I can cure him?" The wife says, "I would but we need the eggs." Yipes! One member's grandchild brought a box of animal crackers. Grandpa read the box and right there it said, "Do not eat if the seal is broken." So he opened the box and sure enough….. Yuk! All names have been withheld for obvious reasons. But call me and I'll squeal - or cluck.

Fosters Freeze went well again. There were about the same number of cars as usual, but many that I had not seen before. We were a little light on Altamont Cruisers attending. Scheduling is tight in these busy times, but as you look at events to attend please try to pay special attention to our sponsored events. Thanks.

If you are missing these events, please consider joining us at socials, shows, tours, and meetings as often as your schedule permits. And keep looking at our Website - it is continually updated thanks to Ed Hughes. www.angelsoft.net/altamontcruisers.

Happy Cruzin'

VP NOTES

We continue to receive applications for membership, four in the past month. As we are out and about as a group to car shows, social events, etc. people are seeing just how much fun we have.

Thanks to the social committee for another great annual picnic. Some attendees got very eggscited at the picnic. The last thing I would do would be to keep a raw egg in my pocket. Congratulations to those athletes who won the various competitive events. Perhaps next year we should consider an award for the best (most innovative) cheater. I think you know who would get my vote. I don’t know about the rest of you who participated in the volleyball games but my mind does not fully realize the age of my body but it fully understood the following two days.

Please remember to pass out flyers for our car show at any car events you attend. Phil and Bob Cummins still have a supply of our great color flyers.

Social News

Here we are in the middle of summer with an Ice Cream Social and Swim Party. (Do we plan things right or what!) The August social will be at Jon and Beth Medeiros home. The date is Sunday, August 29th. The social will start with Munchies at 4:00pm and Dinner around 4:30pm. Jon and Beth will supply the Hot dogs, Hamburgers, beans, Ice Cream and 'fixins'. Please bring 2 dozen homemade cookies for a cookie exchange. A dozen to eat at the party, and a dozen to take home. We did pass a sign up sheet at our last club meeting for MUNCHIES and SALAD. If you couldn't make our last club meeting you have an other chance at our next club meeting in August. If you can't make that and want to join in on the fun, then just give Jon and Beth a call! Pool will be available, so bring those suits and towels.

It's had to believe it's getting so close. Yes, it's bag stuffing time again. Joe and Pat Carrillo will host the Nostalgia Days Car Show stuffing social again this year. The date will be Sept. 19th. At this social what we do is get the goodie bags stuffed and ready for the Car Show. It's a little work and a lot fun! And as always being at the Carrillo's we go home a little stuffed too. There will be more info and a sign up sheet at the next club meeting.

Nostalgia Day Thank You Social will be on October 16th at Jose and Sandy Gonzalez' home. This social is for our club membe's who have worked so hard all year and the day of the event. This is a nice social to attend to thank all those who have been so busy all year long making the Nostalgia Days Car Show such a success. We will have a sign up sheet at our September club meeting for the Thank You Social.

Also in October, we have the Halloween Party. The Halloween Social will be held at Bill and Sally Haag’s home. It's a Scary place at Halloween time. There will be some Trick's and Treat's at this social. It's really a fun social so mark your calendars. The date is October 30th. We will have a sign up sheet and moreiInfo for this social at our August and September meeting.

Then we let you unwind a little after the Tricks and Treats and let you get ready for the Family Christmas Dinner. This will be held at Beeb's in Livermore. This is a great time to dress up and enjoy your friends, have great food. The date we reserved for the Christmas party is December 11th. As a gift to all of us, the Club will pay a portion of our dinner. The cost to member is $20.00 per. person. (What a Deal!) We will have more Information on the Christmas party at our Sept. and Oct. Meeting's.

On the last day of the year we will have a New Year's Eve Party. This is for members, family and friends. What a way to bring in the new millennium with friends and family. More info elsewhere in the newsletter.

Lot's of fun still ahead so let's all try to join in the fun!! It's

really a good way of getting to know your fellow cruisers! Try it you'll like it!

THIRD ANNUAL PICNIC

Sunday, July 18, turned out to be a perfect day for our Third Annual Picnic. It was warm, not hot; breezy, not windy and big fun, not little fun! Attending the picnic were Bruce and Sylvia Hanes, Ed and Cindy English (along with their daughter and sweet little granddaughter), Lloyd Bedeger and Poleda Martin, Danny Dodson, Cal and Irene Sato (with their family and cute granddaughter), Phil and Shellie Scuyler (with daughter and lovely granddaughters),Ed and Carole Hughes, Sue and Dale Benny, Dick and Sue Pope (with family and lots of grandchildren), Doug and Esther Cabral, Joe and Carole Shurko, Jose and Sandy Gonzalez (with family and that adorable grandson), Ron and Kathy Sweet and Bob and Jeanie Cummins (hope I didn't leave anyone out.)

Along with some killer volleyball, there were some wacky games. After much grumbling, just about everyone participated in the egg toss and the "transfer the orange" games. Dick Pope's son-in-law ( I think) and a grandson won the egg toss and Ed English and Phil Schuyler won the orange game (now there was a team!) Later two teams of five participated in a game that was "who can put a spoon attached to a string up and down their clothes the fastest"! The winning team was led by Ed English and included Carole Hughes, Bruce Hanes, Sylvia Hanes and Joe Shurko. (I think. If I'm wrong, don't tell me.)

As always there was plenty of food and fun to go around. The day flew by and hopefully everyone left with full stomachs, tired bodies and happy memories.

Jeanie Cummins

** NEWS FLASH, NEWS FLASH **

Mystery Tour

First of all, there has been a minor date change of the Mystery Tour. The new date is October 9 & 10, 1999. The cost of the Mystery Tour is $175.00 per couple. Money will be collected at the next General Membership meeting. Please make checks out to the Altamont Cruisers. Payment must be received no later than Thursday, September 9th. The Mystery Tour is limited to the first twenty couples to sign up.

Numerous activities are planned for the weekend and all should be extremely pleased with the accommodations and the Saturday night dinner. A very small section of the route will present a challenge to those who have club cars that may tend to overheat so make sure your cooling system is in shape for the journey. I would also ask that some of you (and you know who you are) to be mindful of your gas gauges.

A "running board" lunch will be needed for Saturday. On Sunday there will be a stop to pick up lunch items or you will be able to purchase lunch at the next stop where the tour will officially end.

Remember to bring your cameras, raingear, suntan lotion, parkas, gloves, climbing gear, sailboards, skis, golf clubs, spelunking equipment, fishing poles and surfboards.

New Years 2000

By now, everyone should know that there is a New Years Eve party in the works. Along with the full page flier, there is a little more info that you might want to know about. We will have a sign up sheet & start collecting the money at the August meeting. For those of you out of towners, a few of the club members have graciously opened their homes for the night, so you don’t have to drive back. We also have compiled a list of motels/hotels in the area in case anyone is interested. We would also like everyone planning on going to the party, to bring in a picture of themselves at a very young age(with your name on the back of it). We will collect the pictures when you pay for the party or as soon as you can get it to us. You will get the picture back after the party(we promise). If anyone has any questions, please feel free to call Denise Black at 925-679-0639.

Denise Black

Nostalgia Day Car Show

By the time you read this it will be less than 60 days until our annual car show. We have received double the registrations compared to this time last year. Remember to submit your registration for the show. If you are going to work the day of the show there is no registration cost. If you opt not to work then you must pay the entry cost.

The committee chairs have been working tirelessly since April to bring about an event that has become one of the best car shows to attend in the Bay Area. It is now time for you to assist in any way you can. Specifically, we are in need of raffle prizes. Historically, our show has provided some terrific raffle prizes. The quality and quantity of prizes is a direct result of club members putting forth the effort to contact those in the community who can donate prizes. We are also in need of quality "goody bag" items. Please remember that we need 400 items of whatever goes into a "goody bag".

A sign up list will be available at the next General Membership meeting if you are interested in sponsoring a trophy for the show. There will also be a sign up list for worker positions during the show.

Remember, get out and press the flesh for those raffle prizes. Explain to prospective raffle prize donors what we do with profits from the show, the organizations in the past we have supported financially, and our efforts in preparing the DARE vehicle for Livermore Police Department.
